Are drain cleaners safe for plumbing use?

There are many opinions out there about whether drain cleaners can be used on clogs, whether you are a homeowner or someone who has experience with plumbing repairs. Some experts say that chemical cleaners can be used safely, provided they are used in moderation. Others advise against using them. What should you do if your plumbing system is clogged?

Non-chemical ways to unclog drains

You don't have to resort to drain cleaners. There are some other methods you can try.

  1. Mix equal parts vinegar and baking soda. Place a pot of hot but not boiling water into the drain. Next, combine equal amounts of vinegar and baking soda (approximately one cup of each) and pour it down the drain. Cover the drain for between 5 and 10 minutes, and then add another pot of hot water.
  2. A traditional plunger is a good choice. Plungers are more useful than toilet clogs. You can try to clear your drain using a standard plunger. We recommend using a fresh, clean plunger to unblock a sink. This will prevent cross-contamination.
  3. Use a drain snake. You can buy drain snakes from your local home improvement store, and they are an affordable way to clear minor clogs. You can get your plumbing working again by following the instructions.

If none of the above methods works, there are two options. Call a professional plumber in your area or try drain cleaners. However, there are some things to be aware of before you choose the chemical option.

Dangers associated with drain cleaners

Chemical cleaners can cause damage to your plumbing system and cost more than professional drain cleaning services. Chemical cleaners can make toilet bowls deteriorate, cause metal pipes to disintegrate, and cause plastic pipes to heat up and warp. Even though it's unlikely to cause serious damage with a single application, it's something you should avoid.

A safer option: bio drain cleaners

Bio drain cleaners are a better choice than chemical cleaners. They can be used to clean and maintain drains. Bio drain cleaners do not harm pets or humans and are available at most hardware and home improvement stores for affordable prices. You should be aware that many bio cleaners found in stores aren't as potent as cleaners purchased from a licensed professional plumber.

How bio drain cleaners work

Bio drain cleaners introduce engineered bacteria to your drains and pipes. This bacteria is able to dissolve organic matter such as hair, food residue, and soap scum. The bio cleaner is able to clean drains and pipes of plumbing systems without the need for chemical cleaners. Once the clog is cleared, the bio drain cleaner works its way through the rest of the plumbing system, eliminating potential problems before they occur.

Use a dry drain to start using a bio drain cleaner. Allow the solution to work for several hours before pouring it down the drain. The solution can be left to work overnight for most people. You can repeat this process as many times as necessary to remove the clog.

You can also use bio-drain cleaners to maintain your plumbing. For a clean drain, just pour 1/2 of a cupful of bio cleaner down your drain once a month.
